Rediff.com21 Oct 2024The cumulative rate hikes of 2.5 percentage points by the central bank since May 2022 negatively impacted headline inflation by 1.60 per cent, a paper by senior RBI staffers said on Monday. "Policy rate increases have anchored inflation expectations and modulated aggregate demand, generating disinflationary responses," the paper by Deputy Governor Michael Patra, Indranil Bhattacharyya, Joice John and Avnish Kumar, said.

Rediff.com21 Oct 2024Analysts are expecting pharmaceutical companies to post sales growth of 10-11 per cent in the second quarter this financial year while the Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation) margins are anticipated to improve by about 110 basis points. Ebitda improvement will be led by lower input costs because prices of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are 5-15 per cent lower year-on-year (Y-o-Y). Axis Capital said sales growth would be around 10 per cent, of which growth in the India market would be 11 per cent or so.

However, with a higher poverty standard of $6.85 (about Rs 576) per day - the poverty threshold for middle-income countries - more Indians are living below the poverty line in 2024 than in 1990, primarily driven by 'population growth'. Earlier, the World Bank had said that extreme poverty in India had declined by 38 million in 2021 to 167.49 million after growing in the preceding two years.
